Continued Success through Change – The Origins of Johnstone Supply

In 1953, a single modest store began operating in Portland, Oregon, to serve the needs of local contractors. When he took over the original Johnstone Supply store in 1953, company founder John Shank worked immediately to expand the range of products offered. This soon led to the first Johnstone Supply Catalog, which quickly became a must-have information and ordering resource, and remains to this day the most comprehensive in the industry. As his business prospered and expanded to additional stores, Shank sought out other service-focused individuals to grow the company even more through independently owned locations.

A Cooperative is Formed

John Shank grew the business over nearly four decades, and as he neared retirement, he was determined to pass the company's legacy and success directly into the hands of its hard-working staff. His idea: to form the Johnstone Supply Cooperative, a business model where each store owner would own and operate their individual business yet band together to share experience, resources, operational benefits, and group buying power.

At its launch in 1981, the 32 Member Cooperative was supported by a centralized corporate office providing stores with shared merchandising, warehousing, marketing, purchasing, and financial reporting services. Over the next forty years, the co-op steadily expanded, adding Members, store locations, distribution centers, and product lines.

The Next Evolution

The co-op Members voted in 2021 to partner with Redwood Capital Investments, LLC. In November 2021, the co-op was converted to Johnstone Supply LLC and continues to operate as a wholesale distributor based in Portland, Oregon exclusively providing products and services to 75 individual Johnstone Business Owners.

With over $4B in annual sales, the 450 independently owned wholesale locations across the U.S. and Canada are supported by six Regional Distribution Centers, offering access for its customers to over 75,000 Johnstone products and millions of special-order parts through its relationships with hundreds of the industry's top manufacturers. Johnstone is recognized for its selection, service, and time-saving tools for the contractor.

Johnstone and its local Owners are dedicated to their communities through service and the generous commitment of financial and other resources. Johnstone is proud to be an official partner and active contributor to Operation Homefront, a national non-profit providing emergency financial and other assistance to military veterans and their families.
